Republicans Demand Biden Challenge China on Fentanyl, Prisoners
Republican lawmakers in the US are demanding that President Biden challenge China on its role in the fentanyl crisis and the detention of US citizens in China. The Republicans say that Biden is not being tough enough on China, and they are calling for him to take a more aggressive approach.
\”President Biden must take a tougher stance on China,\” said Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. \”China is our greatest adversary, and we need to be prepared to challenge them on all fronts, including their role in the fentanyl crisis and their detention of US citizens.\”
The Republicans’ demands come as the US faces a growing crisis of fentanyl overdoses. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times more powerful than heroin, and it is responsible for the majority of overdose deaths in the US. In 2021, more than 100,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, and fentanyl was involved in over 70% of those deaths.
The Republicans say that China is a major source of fentanyl, and that the Chinese government is not doing enough to stop the flow of the drug into the US. They also say that China is detaining US citizens without due process, and that Biden is not doing enough to secure their release.
\”China is flooding our streets with fentanyl, and President Biden is turning a blind eye,\” said Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). \”We need to take a tougher stance on China, and we need to demand that they release the Americans they are holding captive.\”
The Biden administration has said that it is taking action to address the fentanyl crisis and to secure the release of detained Americans. However, the Republicans say that the administration is not doing enough, and they are calling for Biden to take a more aggressive approach.
